Existing literature has explored “patchwork” as a concept to understand development, mobility, and segregation at the city level. We applied the same concept at the level of the individual home to examine the material and social practices that consitute it over time.
Using a case study of a house in a low-income neighbourhood in an informal settlement of Karachi, the team has been able to relate the use of space within the house to both the climate (direct heat, sunlight intensity, wind variations, flooding, etc.) as well as the thermal properties of the materials used for construction.
