His research interests primarily focus on examining institutional, political and epistemological dimensions of scientific knowledge and technological systems. He is the author of "The Technological State in Indonesia: the co-constitition of High Technology and Authoritarian Politics', and the editor of 'The Sociotechnical Constituition of Resilience: A New Perspective on Governing Risk and Disaster'

    Nausheen is Director, Karachi Urban Lab & Professor City & Regional Planning, in the School of Economics & Social Sciences (SESS), Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi. She received her PhD from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP), Columbia University. Nausheen’s research focuses on the politics of urban planning, infrastructural development, and climate change. Nausheen is the author of Infrastructure Redux: Crisis, Progress in Industrial Pakistan & Beyond (2015, Palgrave Macmillan).

  • Jamie Cross

    Jamie is Principal Investigator for the Cool Infrastructures project. He has a longstanding commitment to the ethnographic study of energy, technologies and markets against the backdrop of climate change. His writing on off grid solar energy in places of chronic poverty has been published in Limn, South Atlantic Quarterly, Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Development and Change. He is also the co-designer of Solar What?! - an open source, solar powered lamp built to challenge the market logics of cleantech saviourism.

  • Daniel Friedrich

    Daniel is a Lecturer in Mathematics for Engineering Applications in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. He is Theme Leader of the Energy Storage group and leads the thermal energy theme in the Energy@Ed network, combining its research strengths in energy. His research covers mathematical modelling, simulation and optimisation of energy systems and, in particular, thermal energy system integration.

For the last decade her creative and anthropological research has centred upon the topics of building, making and materials, learning-through-doing, the senses, and importantly, on environmental values and action.She combines teaching contextual and critical studies of design with courses on social and ecological or environmentally-friendly design, and contributes to the new postgraduate MA programme, Design for Change.

  • Aalok Khandekar

    Aalok holds a doctoral degree in Science & Technology Studies from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and has subsequently worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Technology and Society Studies at Maastricht University. Khandekar directs STS Infrastructures (one instance of PECE), a platform supporting a wide-range of initiatives to constitute and bring together a global community of STS researchers, including the Transnational STS Working Group. He is also the incoming editor-in-chief of Engaging Science, Technology, and Society, the Open Access journal of the Society for Social Studies of Science.

  • Marie Morelle

    Marie is a Senior Lecturer in Geography in University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne. She is currently on secondment in Cameroon with the Institut de Recherche pour la Development and Fondation Paul Ango Ela.  She teaches development studies and urban planning in the South, social and political geography, and research methodology. Her research questions deal with issues of informal governance, especially the prison in Cameroon, informal activities (street mechanics) and the police. She is currently developing a new research program on urban heritage in Africa. Her most recent work is published in Politique Africaine, Métropoles and L’Espace Politique. 

  • Anindrya Nastiti

    Anindrya is an engineer-by-training who pursues interdisciplinary research in the intersection of environment and human behavior. She is an assisstant professor in the Environmental Management and Technology Research Group, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). She has been involved in several interdisciplinary research projects with social scientists on the topic of water security challenges, water governance and stewardship,  human rights to water and sanitation, inclusive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and others. Her recent research has been published in Environment & Urbanization, WIREs Water, and Water Alternatives.

  • Elspeth Oppermann

    Elspeth is a critical geographer specializing in adaptation to extreme heat, which she explores through sensory ethnography and theories of practice. She holds a senior research fellow post at the Rachel Carson Center (LMU) and at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS). Her current focus is on how the social is co-produced through material-energetic relations, and the development of an inter-disciplinary, more-than-human thermal ethnographic approach to the analysis of physiological heat management. She is a member of the International Commission on Occupational Health’s Scientific Committee on Thermal Factors.

  • Sajid Mehmood

    Sajid is a PhD student at The University of Edinburgh. He holds M.Sc. Thermal Power Engineering and B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. He is currently working on resilient cooling solutions for buildings under climate change. His research investigates the role of different conventional and advanced passive strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change on thermal energy needs and comfort conditions in free-running and air-conditioned buildings for distinctive climates. He is also investigating the feasibility of solar assisted cooling systems for the air conditioning of buildings.

  • Gérard Amougou

    Gérard holds a doctoral degree in political science from University of Yaoundé II in December 2015 and defended, in February 2017, a thesis in sociology at the University of Liège. He’s Assistant in the political science department of the University of Yaoundé II, and a researcher in Fondation Paul Ango Ela (Yaoundé). His research focuses on emergence policies in Cameroon, subjectivisation, the problematic of the individual subject and enterprising youth. His most recent works are published in Politique Africaine, Nouvelles perspectives des sciences sociales and Critiques internationales.

  • Maïa Ghattas

    Maïa has a PhD in Geography from the Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne University. She became a Doctor in 2019. She is a Fellowship Researcher in the Laboratoire PRODIG where she pursued her doctoral research about urban heritage in public spaces. She has worked on urban government and urban planning in Cameroonian cities. Her research combines cultural geography, urban planning, as well as social and political approches of cities in the Global South. She uses various methods, some of which she developed during her thesis or during residencies as filming, drawing and making maps. Her most recent work is published in the review L'Espace Politique.

    Adam Abdullah is a Senior Research Associate at the Karachi Urban Lab, IBA Karachi and works on urban issues, social-demographic analysis, and on conceptualizing compounded vulnerabilities through spatial and statistical data. He is currently doing a PhD titled ‘Discursive Production of the Urban Subject: A Foucauldian Critical Discourse Analysis on Karachi’s Urban Planning’ at the Middle East Technical University, Turkey..

  • Aqdas Fatima

    Aqdas Fatima is a Research Assistant at the Karachi Urban Lab. She recently graduated from the University of Kent with a Bachelors degree in Social and Biological Anthropology. Aqdas has a keen interest in understanding the social and structural dimensions of urban spaces, particularly through visual research. At KUL she is researching the relationship between heat, cooling and urban spaces.

  • Soha Macktoom

    Soha Macktoom is a Senior Research Associate at the Karachi Urban Lab (KUL), Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi. She is an Architect, with a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi. At KUL, she has been looking at the material and spatial transformations of the city, with a specific focus on low-income neighborhoods. She explores the intersections of materials, heat and vernacular adaptive strategies.

    Muhammad Toheed is a GIS Analyst and Senior Research Associate at the Karachi Urban Lab. He received his M.Phil in Urban & Regional Planning fron NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi. At KUL he is engaged int he interpretation of data concerning densification, changes in land tenure, land use and temperature changes int he city over the years.

  • Atoofa Samo

    Atoofa Samo is a Research Associate at the Karachi Urban lab and has a M.Phil in Anthropology from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. At KUL Atoofa observes how lower income groups take measures in informal ways to accomodate and react to extreme heat; what are the available resources, practices and indigenous knowledge through which people satisfy their necessities for cooling.

  • Anant Maringanti

    Director

    Anant is a geographer with a PhD from the University of Minnesota and has taught graduate courses at the National University of Singapore and University of Hyderabad. His research and teaching interests centre on questions of urbanization and globalization from the South Asian vantage point. He is currently the Director of the Hyderabad Urban Lab, a multi disciplinary research programme run by the Right to the City Foundation. He has published widely in national and international academic journals on social movements, politics of development and urbanization.

  • N Sai Venkata Sarath Chandra

    N Sai Venkata Sarath Chandra is a research associate with a diverse academic background in both natural sciences and the humanities. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Climate Change at the IIT Hyderabad. His interests include understanding the human health impacts of climate change with a special focus on heat waves / rising temperatures and exploring global politics of climate change. He is also interested in understanding the impacts of climate change on endangered wildlife species, ecosystems and nature. He conducted several awareness programs on protecting endangered species, nature, ecosystems, biodiversity, and contributed articles in Indian English national newspapers.

  • Anushree Gupta

    Anushree Gupta is a Ph.D. scholar at the Department of Liberal Arts, IIT Hyderabad. She holds an MA in Development Studies from the TISS Mumbai, and a B. Tech. (ICT) from DA-IICT Gandhinagar. She is interested in exploring technologies as cultural artifacts, and their intersections with labor and place-making practices. Her Ph.D. research examines urban techno-entrepreneurial cultures in the global south urban context and the specific shape they took during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the urban home as a gendered site of entrepreneurial activity. In this project, she is looking at the production of the refrigerator as a domestic commodity and the intersections it reveals between the home, the urban, and the technological.

  • Goutham Raj Konda

    Goutham Raj Konda is an urban researcher with an interest in housing, livelihoods, policy, governance, informality, and poverty. He received his B.A. in Social Sciences and M.A. in Urban Policy and Governance from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, India. He is currently researching the role of air conditioner repair and rental services in regulating heat impact among households in Hyderabad.

  • Tanaya Bhowal

    Tanaya Bhowal holds an MA in Natural Resources and Governance from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Hyderabad, and a B.Sc in Geography Honours from Loreto College, Kolkata. Her research interests lie in exploring questions of environmental changes, energy, sustainability, and livelihood. In this project, she intends to understand the impacts of heat from the perspective of thermal comfort of households using an ethnographic approach. She is also interested to explore the changes in consumption and expenditure patterns of the households as a result of rising temperatures.

  • Kiranmayi Raparthi

    Kiranmayi Raparthi earned her doctoral degree in Urban Planning and Public Policy from The University of Texas at Arlington. Her doctoral research was aimed towards assessing the impact of urban planning policies on carbon-dioxide emissions through empirical evidences and examined the significance of urban planning policies as an effective tool in climate change mitigation. Her research interests deal with climate change adaptation, livelihood and environmental sustainability and an interdisciplinary understanding of the human dimensions of environmental/climate change with the aim to inform policy and action.

  • Aarti Latkar

    Aarti finds it difficult to categorize herself professionally and keep within one disciplinary boundary. Her interest areas are wide and broadly intersect with topics that are covered under studies of development. She has previously worked as a research associate in IDC, School of Design, IIT Bombay and finished her master’s in Development Studies from the Liberal Arts Department, IIT Hyderabad in July 2021. On the Cool Infrastructures project, she has been involved in studying ice— its history, manufacture, distribution, uses and interlinkages with cooling practices, especially in Hyderabad.

  • Rittu Anilkumar

    Rittu is a Library and Information Science professional with a profound interest in data management. She completed her postgraduation in Library and Information Science from Central University of Tamil Nadu, and graduation in English Language and Literature from St. Teresa’s College, Kochi. She is interested in exploring opportunities in open-source data management platforms and in comprehending methods of data storage, processing and retrieval.

    Abhijit is a Research Associate at IIT Hyderabad. He is an architect. Abhijit has a focus on improving building energy efficiency. His research interests are inclined towards architectural design for mixed-use development, urban design, building energy simulation, thermal performance of a building, daylight simulation, and spatial data analysis.

    Uzma is primarily an urban planner who loves finding patterns and connecting dots. She has previously worked as a Disaster Management Professional dedicated to minimizing the damage from natural and man-made disasters through effective management. She owns strong technical skills, particularly in processing, analyzing and interpreting remotely sensed data and using GIS as a creative approach in solving urban challenges. Her interests lie in exploring human-environment interaction and its contribution to climate change, anthropogenic heat estimation using RS data and various aspects of heat stress including LST, UHI and thermal comfort.

    Rifda is a Research Associate in the Jakarta team with a bachelor degree in Architecture from Universitas Indonesia, and a masters degree in Urban Planning from University of Melbourne. Rifda is interested in how the build environment can enhance and improve the quality of life of the urban inhabitants. Rifda is interested in how cities can design and create policies that are innovative and scalable to make cities more sustainable and liveable.

  • Dani Mohammad Ramadhan

    Dani Mohammad Ramadhan is a Research Associate for the Jakarta Team. Receiving his BA and MA in Social Anthropology from Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung, Indonesia, He has strong interest primarily in Political Ecology, both in rural and urban settings, also in Anthropology of Policy, and issues around Human Security. He has been involved as a social expert in several national infrastructure developments in Indonesia. His recent work has been published in Central European Journal of International and Security Studies. Outside Cool Infrastructure project, he is also working as research assistant at Centre of Environment and Sustainability Science (CESS) at Universitas Padjadjaran.

  • Yemiko Happy Nandatama

    Yemiko Happy Nandatama is a research associate at the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Bandung Institute of Technology, and researcher at the Lapor Covid 19 (laporcovid19.org). His focus is on urban issues, the relation between religion and public health, data analysts, and public policy observers. He completed his undergraduate study of Divine Philosophy at Satya Wacana Christian University.

  • Galuh Syahbana Indraprahasta

    Galuh is a human geographer and planner by training with a PhD in Geography from Ghent University Belgium. Outside the Cool Infrastructure project, he works as a senior researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Indonesia. Galuh also teaches and supervises post-graduate students at IPB University Bogor with topics centered around planning theory and urban and regional development in general. His research interests cover global urbanization, network perspective in urban geography, urban policy mobility, and the relation between technology-innovation and urban-regional development. His recent work has been published in Habitat International and Routledge.

  • Siska Widya Dewi Kusumah

    Siska is a medical doctor and environmental health specialist. She still actively working as a training coordinator at the Center for Environmental Studies (PSLH) in ITB and also a medical doctor at a private clinic in Cimahi, Indonesia. Siska continues her education as a doctoral student at Bandung Institute of Technology majoring in environmental engineering focused on environmental health risk assessment related to antibiotic-resistant microbes. During her work in ITB, she was involved as a research assistant in research about environmental and occupational health risk assessment, environmental toxicology related to heavy metals and pharmaceutical wastes, environmental microbiology, and HSE management system.

  • Asyifa Laksmi Nurulita

    Asyifa Laksmi Nurulita is a final year student at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) majoring in Environmental Engineering. Within Cool Infrastructures, she has been collaborating on various projects including the evaluation of exposure to extreme heat suffered by street vendors in Jakarta.

  • Brianna Salsabila Bermanda

    Research Assistant

    Brianna is a final year student at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), majoring in Environmental Engineering. She has an interest in environmental management and sustainability. As part of the Cool Infrastructures project, she has been involved in studying occupational heat stress and perceptions of thermal comfort.

  • Elnaya Mahadevi Pillian

    Research Assistant

    Elnaya is a third-year undergraduate of the Environmental Engineering program at Institut Teknologi Bandung. She has a particular interest in environmental health, management and sustainability. Her written works on the subjects have earned recognition from UNESCO and Hay Festival. Currently, she is working as a research assistant on inclusive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) project and assistant lecturer as well laboratory assistant for environmental microbiology.

  • Luh Putu Merta Karunia Putri

    Putri is a Civil Engineer. She has a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Universitas Udayana and a master degree in Environmental Engineering with focus in Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Putri’s research interests are safety performance in context of behavior, human factor, human-environmental interaction, safety management system and geotechnical investigation.

  • Safira Salsabila

    Research Associate

    Safira completed her bachelor’s degree in Architecture and her master’s degree in Urban Development Studies, both at the University of Indonesia. She has worked as an urban designer and has been involved in projects of community engagement and research related to community participation & urban informality. Her research interest lies in how human behavior and social practice produce mechanisms that are important for the planning and design process to achieve livable space.
