Exposure to extreme heat is a serious public health risk for outdoors workers in tropical cities. Street vendors in Jakarta significantly contribute to the urban informal economy, yet they have minimal social protection from the health risks they experience at work.
The Cool Infrastructures team in Jakarta are conducting qualitative and quantitative studies to assess the level of exposure to heat and evaluate the related risks of heat-related illness among street vendors in the city.
The team will be using a range of different indicators and tools, including the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) method and the Basic Thermal Risk Assessment tool. They will be also exploring street vendors’ perceptions of thermal comfort and exposure to heat.
